The #1 Grammar Mistake English Language Learners Make

{“en”:”Hi there I’m Drew Badger the world’s number one English Fluency Guide and in this video we’re going to be talking about the number one grammar mistake that English language learners make I get so many questions from learners that have problems with being able to understand grammar or more importantly even if they do understand how grammar works they can’t use it automatically and fluently when they speak so I wanted to begin this video before talking about the actual mistake people make more talking about why you actually have this problem typically people will be not having the ability to use grammar automatically because they have learned it in a way that’s taught them grammar rules but hasn’t taught them how to actually use the grammar without speaking now people are learning the language like a robot or a computer in most traditional language classes they get a list of grammar rules and often even in the videos that you’ll see right here on YouTube with people are teaching grammar they’re doing it the traditional way to give you a list of things written on a whiteboard and they explain its this tense and then if we want to talk about the past then you change it and it basically goes on to explain things that you understand logically but because you haven’t trained yourself to use these things automatically that’s really what stops you from being able to get fluent now this isn’t your fault because this is the way that native speakers have taught non-native speakers for many many years or even people that are non-native speakers that are also trying to help other non-native speakers learn the language I’ve been teaching it it’s just a traditional typical way and this is what we were fighting against with English anyone and trying to help people see that you should be learning things visually and then understanding things and practicing them much more so that you can actually use them confidently and correctly automatically when you speak so the number one mistake people make is not with a particular grammar point it’s more about the learning of grammar in general you may have been learning this way ever since you began learning the English language or any other language you’re studying but it’s now your opportunity to change the way you learn so you can start training yourself to speak because what you really need to do if you want to use correct grammar automatically is to practice using grammar and to learn it the right way the first thing you need to do to become a master of grammar so that you can use it automatically is to learn it visually you don’t want to learn things where you’re just reading it in a textbook and getting a translation of what your verb is to what a verb is in English this is another one of the really big problems that people make and this is why maybe if you do hesitate when you speak this is one of the big reasons why this happens as an example if I’m trying to learn Spanish I don’t actually see somebody running or drinking or whatever and then learn the spanish word for those things i’m just reading in a dictionary maybe I see the word like I don’t know bear for drink if that means drink I don’t remember I took like a little bit of Spanish and failed it in school anyway but this idea of just having something in a textbook where you have to drink and then you have the opposite thing the translation of that next to it and then you’re just supposed to remember what those things are now some people are able to do this but I was not and I know a lot of the people that follow me here watching these videos have trouble understanding in that way as well so what you have to do number one is learn everything in English and the way you do that is doing it visually especially with verbs and this is why we have all these little video clips in these videos and I try to demonstrate things visually as opposed to just writing things up on a blackboard it’s important to see what things look like you know to have the spelling something like that but really the most important thing is connecting the meaning of something that you’re learning with the word that you’re trying to remember so I’m not trying to translate from your language into English but by taking a word where you’re seeing somebody running and then you see I ok the word is to run for that so the first step to grammar mastery is to learn everything visually through English the second step is once you’ve mastered the grammar itself to understand and practice using it by telling it in different ways as an example I could just maybe if I’m speaking in a very simple way talked about yesterday I went to a party or tomorrow I will go to a party so I’m taking something and I’m just making different sentences in my mind by practicing something and again I’m connecting the meaning of something not with a particular verb tense but in the same way children would learn it it’s almost like you know if we look at the verb to eat so if a child is listening to a verb like that and I here as a young someone says I eat dinner and I’m watching them they are eating right now ok I understand what that means I eat but if I here I ate dinner yesterday I’m actually hearing these as two different words it’s not until we get a little bit older that we connect oh these are different tenses of the same thing so we’re actually really getting to the meaning of something just this word eight means to do something in the past tense but then maybe like it’s a little bit easier to see when you have a regular verb but something irregular like to eat when it becomes eight something it becomes a little bit more difficult to understand but again this is why you should be connecting with the meaning directly so the first time you’re connecting with the meaning directly is seeing something visually and the second time is you’re connecting with the tents by hearing that thing and understanding what the meaning of that is so if you understand the time period ok yesterday my friend did something so we’re not talking about right now we’re talking about a period in the past instead of he does something now or he will do something in the future he did something in the past now these are both of the steps that we do in master English conversation but however you like to learn keep these two things in mind and that will help you improve your English grammar and use it and really become a much more competent user of correct grammar automatically well I hope you have enjoyed this quick video really it’s a very simple process for mastering grammar once you stop doing it the traditional way so if you’re trying to learn something like you’re a Spanish speaker and trying to learn English through Spanish or Portuguese or any other language Chinese French Italian you have to remove all of those other languages and connect exactly with the English language through visual exercises so something where you actually get to see what’s happening and learning in the same way a child does and then listening to stories which explain okay we have a particular tense and we’re trying to show you exactly how something works but we’re again connecting with the meaning of that as opposed to trying to drill tenses and remember grammar point all of these things are really simple and will help you improve but you have to actually practice these things so just take a few things maybe a few sentences and then play with that so learn it as a visual thing and then try practicing okay if I did that thing yesterday how would the sentence sound so yesterday I sindh to music today I am listening or right now I am listening to music if you have enjoyed this video do click that like button become a subscriber to the YouTube channel and do share this video with other people who also struggle to use grammar correctly it’s really not difficult to become a master of 1 Simple Trick to Become Fluent in English – the JAM Technique – How to Be a Confident Speaker

{“en”:”Hi and welcome back. In this video, Iu2019m going to teach you one simple trick that you can use to become a fluent English speaker by spending just 10 minutes a day. The best part about this is that you donu2019t need a partner u2013 you can do this by yourself. This is a technique that has worked for many of my students and if you do what I tell you in this video, I guarantee that you will become more fluent in English.

So what is this trick? Well, itu2019s a technique known as JAM. Uh, no, not that kind of jam. This is actually a little fluency game based on a show that airs on BBC radio. The reason itu2019s called JAM is because itu2019s short for Just A Minute. This game has three stages. So hereu2019s how you play it: Youu2019re going to talk about a topic for one minute. That is, youu2019re going to give a speech without any preparation. So you just pick a topic – you can either take general topics like sports, hobbies, friends, books etc. or you can choose a question. For example, what is your favorite mode of transport? And once you have a topic, you speak. Now when you do, there are some rules: The first rule is that you cannot stop speaking. You must talk for the full minute. If you have to pause to catch your breath, itu2019s OK, but you cannot pause for more than three seconds. Even if you say nonsense or you say something unrelated to the topic it doesnu2019t matter.

Youu2019re just going to keep talking. So thatu2019s rule number one. Rule number two is you cannot repeat the same ideas. That means you canu2019t just say the same things over and over and over again u2013 this isnu2019t pronunciation practice u2013 itu2019s fluency development, so no repetition of the same ideas. And rule number three is no writing u2013 you cannot make any notes while you are speaking, you must only concentrate on speaking. These are just the three rules. So to begin, you need a timer, this can be on your smartphone for example. You start stage one by starting the timer and you speak until the one minute is reached. Iu2019m going to give you an example of how to do this. Iu2019m going to take this question: u201cWhat is your favorite mode of transport?u201d and Iu2019m going to speak for a minute on this topic.

Now I havenu2019t done any preparation, so letu2019s see how I do. OK, so whatu2019s my favorite mode of transport? I would have to say that itu2019s the train. Thatu2019s because um, actually, you get to see a lot of nice scenery, beautiful landscapes and things like that. And you know, train journeys generally tend to be longer than other types of, or rather, other modes of transport. You can see Iu2019m really struggling for ideas but I canu2019t stop, I have to keep going so Iu2019m saying whatever comes to mind, thatu2019s no problem. But back to the topic at hand, yeah, train journeys because theyu2019re longer, theyu2019re more relaxing. And one last thing I want to mention is that Iu2019ve had the opportunity to meet interesting people and make friends on many train journeys. As a kid I used to ride the train a lot with my family. We used to go to lots of places by train and itu2019s actually something that I really enjoyed.

Phew! That was hard. But thatu2019s OK. Thatu2019s the whole point of this exercise. That was stage one. Now weu2019re going to move on to stage two. Hereu2019s where weu2019re really going to start building our fluency. The first part of stage two is making notes u2013 so you can use a paper and pen now. And youu2019re going to think back to the speech that you just gave, and collect ideas you came up with. In my speech, I remember that I had three ideas: The first was that on train journeys, you get to see a lot of beautiful scenery. The second idea was that train journeys are longer, so theyu2019re more relaxing. The third idea was that you get to meet interesting people and make friends. So once you have these ideas down, youu2019re going to repeat the exercise. That means, youu2019re going to set your timer for one minute and youu2019re going to speak again on the same topic, but now, you can use your notes to guide you.

You will notice that this time, you are actually able to speak more fluently because you have some good ideas on paper, and you will be able to expand on your ideas and give more information. Once the timer hits one minute, you stop. And we move on to stage three. Just like in stage two, youu2019re going to go to paper and pen, but this time, youu2019re going to add more ideas to your notes based on your second speech. I added some ideas like this. So now u2013 for one final time, youu2019re going to speak again. This is your final speech. So you set your timer for one minute, you use your notes and speak. Iu2019m going to give you my final speech based on my notes so you can see the difference. So here we go: My favorite mode of transport is actually the train. I love train travel for two or three reasons.

The first is that the journey is usually longer than when you fly on a plane, or even when you travel by car or bus. So, as a result, itu2019s very relaxing. Another big advantage is that you get to see a lot of scenery when you ride a train. Now if youu2019re riding the subway and your train is going through a tunnel the whole time, then obviously you wonu2019t see any natural beauty but if youu2019re lucky enough to ride a train through the countryside, Iu2019ll tell you, thatu2019s an incredible experience.

But for me, personally, the best part about trains is that you get to meet people and make friends, especially on some of the longer journeys. Even if you donu2019t take each otheru2019s phone numbers or become best buddies, you still get to have great conversations and meet some really interesting people. So those are the three reasons why I enjoy train travel so much. Alright, I know that was a little over a minute but thatu2019s OK. If you are in the flow, you donu2019t have to stop at one minute. You can keep going. As your fluency improves, you can challenge yourself by setting your timer for two, three or even five minutes. But did you notice how much better my second speech was? I actually improved my fluency on this topic over the three stages. Now I know I said that there are three stages to this exercise but thereu2019s a bonus stage if youu2019re really serious about improving your English. That stage is: record yourself. Once you have finished speaking for the third time, you can give your speech once again, but now, you speak into your cell phone or a voice recorder.

This is fantastic for two reasons: because first, you can then listen back to the recording and you can identify what areas you need to improve, particularly your pronunciation. But also, if you keep your recordings on your phone or save them to your computer, you can come back after a few weeks or a few months and listen to them and see how much you have improved since that time. I know that many of us hate listening to our own voices u2013 we feel really shy and embarrassed but trust me this is a very powerful way to improve your speaking: recording and listening to yourself. Of course, if you donu2019t want to do that you can just do JAM u2013 the three stages and that will help you to improve your fluency. And it takes only ten minutes.

I suggest that you make this your daily fluency workout u2013 do it at least once a day. Practice doing JAM on many different topics. And if you do, I guarantee you, you will become more fluent, just practicing by yourself. Alright, if you liked this lesson, give it a thumbs up by hitting the like button.
