The 4 Main Meanings of the word Crook English Teacher Mark’s English Lessons Aussie Slang ESL EFL

{“en”:”Hey guys, how are you going? Freezing hey, absolutely freezing today. Today as promised we are going to look at the word CROOK. There are 4 main uses of the word crook. Um yeah, 4 ones that we use commonly, there may be others but I wouldn’t worry about them too much, this is enough for now. So the first one crook, I’m crook, I’m sick, I’m as crook as a dog, I feel crook in the guts, Oh my guts, my stomach, I feel crook in the guts, yeah? You can also say, I’m feeling crook, yeah? My wife’s crook, the kids are crook, everyone’s crook.

Um, I’ve just written some notes, I’ll just check I’ve got them all here, Oh you can ask a question, Um,” Are you feeling crook?” Sick, “are you feeling sick?” Um, “Have you been crook,” “Where have you been crook? Where have you been? Have you been crook?” Yeah, so. Anyway that’s the first one and I’ve written some notes for you to look underneath the video, there’s um, a comprehensive lot of notes, um so you can check up on that as well. o.k? The second meaning is, um for a part of your body to not be working well. So for example you could say, “I’ve got a crook back.” which means I’ve got a bad back.

Yeah, or “I’ve got a crook knee, it’s not good, it hurts in the cold. Maybe like today, it’s freezing, maybe your knee plays up in the cold, which means, If it plays up it means, it doesn’t work well, yeah, maybe, you’ve got arthritis or something, um, yeah, so let me just check, other words that you can use instead of crook here are words like dodgy which means not good and we’ll look at in another lesson but you can say I’ve got a dodgy knee or a dodgy back yeah or a dodgy ticker T I C K E R means “heart,” I’ve got a dodgy ticker it means I’ve got a bad heart I’ve gotta be careful. Um yeah or “bung,” a very Aussie word, B U N G I’ve got a knee or I’ve got a bung leg, yeah, um yeah I’ve got some sentences here for example, ‘She’s got a crook back, she shouldn’t be lifting anything heavy.

O.k. So that’s the second meaning for your body part not to be working well. The third meaning can mean and this is not slang this is just a word um used as a noun, like he’s a crook, um like a criminal an untrustworthy person, you wouldn’t trust them, yeah, so ” Be careful of that guy, he’s a crook.” For example, someone who’s like does um yeah small crimes like stealing and car theft they’re a small time crook. Big, big time crook you know like mafia type, type people, um, yeah really really bad dudes anyway, um, so yeah for example um, “She was a crook, (past tense) she was a crook but she’s changed now.” And oh as an adjective you can actually use it as an adjective that um for example he’s crooked which means he’s he’s not honest yeah, if you’re straight, then this means that you are um you’re not dishonest, there’e another meaning but we won’t go into that now, o.k.

Um the fourth meaning I’ve got here um this is very Aussie again and not not as common as the others but it’s still used a lot in Australia, if somebody goes crook on you they get angry with you, so for example, “My mum went crook on me last night, my mum went crook on me last night because I hadn’t done my homework,” yeah? Or “I’ll get crook on you if you, um, yeah, if you don’t clean up your mess, so you can say, “on you, with you,” um often, more often on you, I’ll get crook you, it sounds quite strange but it’s just an expression which means angry, so yeah you can say, “Dad went crook on me because I smashed his car,” which my dad actually did go crook on me and fair enough I I smashed 2 of his cars and blew up another motor, so he went crook on me and I I probably deserved that, sorry dad, um, yeah, that was a long time ago, all is forgiven now.

Um there is another meaning, actually, I’ll just give you the question for that, ” Did your parents go crook on you for getting home so late last night?” That’s another way of saying get angry with you. but there another word “crooked,” which means not straight, yeah, for example here, you can see here, I’ve drawn a crooked line, it’s not straight and underneath a straight line o.k? So that’s a different meaning although in some ways it’s similar isn’t it? You could have your hat on crooked, here it’s on straight, hey man you recognise that? Or it can go on crooked, yeah, maybe your collar is crooked, your shirts all crooked, um or a picture, the picture’s straight here now, let’s bring that a bit closer for you, it’s straight, now it’s crooked so you need to straighten up, it’s crooked, now it’s straight, crooked, straight, o.k.

um, that’s it for today, I hope you learnt a lot, it’s a well used word, um worth learning all of those meanings because we do use it in many different ways, o.k. I think next time, we’ll have a look at the word, “dodgy,” to help you out with some more Aussie slang, this is Mark from Mark’s English lessons, Aussie slang, um, thank you guys for all the likes and subscriptions, and for supporting me and I’ll continue to support you o.k? Have a great day, keep warm, rug up, rug up, R U G means to keep warm, yeah, you wear a hat,a scarf, beanie, well hat and beanie the same thing, but keep warm, wear a nice big jumper and jacket. O.k take care, see you soon. Bye.. “}

Top 10 English learning mistakes – how to study English fast and easy

{“en”:”Hello, my dear friends! Welcome to Series English! My name is Antonia Romaker. And today we are going to ponder over the question: ‘How should I study the English language?’ Actually I have already three classes, devoted to this topic. Number one is about my personal experience, number two is devoted to some general tips and number three is about motivation and different materials and well structure which you can use while you study the English language.

But today we are going to talk about top ten mistakes made while studying the language! Well it can be English, or Russian, or German, or Spanish, it doesn’t matter. Actually the mistakes are all the same for studying any foreign language. So top ten English learning mistakes. Number one is ‘I don’t wanna!’ So it’s connected with motivation, we’ve already talked about it. And you should know that having a powerful reason to study a foreign language, well, actually to do anything is crucial, it’s the most important thing. Because if you wanna study, if you have this overpowering feeling that you need it, that you want it, then it will help you a lot, it will boost the process, it will make it much faster.

So it’s very important, try to find your reason. It’s actually not that hard, there are a lot of reasons. If you find it difficult, then watch my class, devoted to motivation. It will help you a little bit to find your reason. Moving on to the second mistake, which I would call ‘Spontaneous diligence’. What’s that? Well, I’m talking about the structure of your lessons. I mean the timing, how you organize yourself in terms of time. Do if you study the English language very hard, very intensively for like a week or a month, and then you think: ‘I’m tired, I’m too bored, I’m going to stop for a little while’.

And then you forget about the language for half a year or so. That’s not a very good thing to do. Because if you study regularly, every day or every other day, it will give you so much more! Well, as for me personally, to tell you the truth, I’m quite a spontaneous person. So I can’t focus on something for a very long period of time. So I need to change my routine. I need to do different things. So that’s why a good idea would be probably to, well, combine your studies with something else, like going in for sports. So when you are too tired, you just go out and, well, jog. Or anything of the kind. So I understand that it is hard to concentrate, to focus for a very long period of time. But try to be persistent, try to do it every day. Let it be for half an hour, let it be for two hours or ten minutes, it doesn’t matter.

Try to be persistent, try to study the language every day, every other day, regularly! If you find it very difficult to make yourself study the language, then you probably need a teacher, well, a tutor, who would help you to organize yourself. But remember that you can study the language yourself without any help. Well, using some additional materials, like textbooks, books, videos, audios and so on. So they could help, but you can manage without a teacher. It would be really great if you had someone who you would be able to contact and find out some useful information, and the person who would clarify some vague topics and so on. But anyway you can study the language almost just by yourself. At least if you have some basic information, basic structures, But anyway you can study the language almost just by yourself. At least if you have some basic information, basic structures, grammatical ones and basic ideas about the language, you can improve, continue on your own.

The third mistake is ‘A little here, a little there.’ It’s connected with the idea that some students focus on particular topics and that’s it. So they eliminate some parts of the language from their studies. And that’s not a very good idea, because you need to have profound knowledge, well, it depends on what purpose you have. If you want just to speak and that’s it, then you can focus more on some aspects. But completely eliminating some parts of the language is not good. For example some approaches suggest, that you should not study grammar or you should not listen or read.

It’s wrong, because if you do not study grammar at all, it will take forever until you start speaking. So grammar helps you constructing, creating sentences correctly. And eliminating reading, for instance, might make it difficult for you if you have to write a letter or an e-mail and so on. So try to cover all the aspects more or less. Focus on the aspects which you are particularly interested in But do not delete, do not eliminate some parts of the language just because you think that they are not useful or boring. So try to be well-organized, well-structured. Try to make your studies well-structured.

Here I would also like to include one aspect: that you should not get satisfied just by the studies at school or at the university. Because if you study just during classes and that’s it, you do not do any homework, you do not study yourself, it won’t give you good results, it won’t give you quick results. So if you want to improve quickly you need to dive into it. Dive into the English language. The mistake number four is ‘The ultimate WHY’. Let me explain. Here I am talking about overwhelming thoroughness. So some people just get obsessed with the idioms or phrasal verbs, or grammar.

You should not get obsessed, it’s not a very good thing to do. So try to be open to new opportunities, new aspects, to new approaches and methods. Try to study different things and do not get obsessed, do not concentrate too much on just one aspect. For example, if you are at the beginning of your studies, it’s not a very good idea to study a lot of idioms and phrasal verbs. Because they are for intermediate and higher levels. So if you can’t formulate some basic ideas in English, you do not need idioms and phrasal verbs. First study some basics and then continue improving and rising to the sun! Some students also ask a lot of ‘why’ questions, like: Why should I use the auxiliary verb here? Why do prepositions change the meaning of phrasal verbs so much? Why in the word ‘monday’ is the last syllable reduced to [i]? Well, some of such questions can be answered actually, and the answers might help you. But some of such questions cannot be answered.

So… and you do not need to get so deep into the language. Some things cannot be explained, some things are connected with history. So and historical processes and evolving of the English language. So sometimes it’s not a very good idea to be too thorough, to be too obsessed with some tiny little details. You should see the whole picture, this is what counts. The next mistake is ‘A quickie’. Well a ‘quickie’ is something done very quickly. It can also have some sexual context, but anyway! The mistake I’m talking about here is that some people try to study some topics very quickly! like – hop, and it is done! I know it! I am good at it! Well you need to be thorough a little bit here, so especially when you talk about some grammatical topics. You need to study them, well, little by little. And you need to practice them, then you won’t make any mistakes later on.

So if you want to speak perfectly, try to be thorough, but not too thorough, which I have already pointed out. p.s. if you think that you can study a foreign language in just one month or even in one year and speak it perfectly after that, then I’m sorry, I’ll have to disappoint you, it’s not possible. So a quickie in terms of studying foreign languages is out of the question. OK, that’s it, today we studied five mistakes, five English learning mistakes.

And during our next class devoted to this topic we’ll continue, because there are five more! So I hope that you found this class useful. And it helped you a little bit to improve your learning process. And now studying English will get easier and more exciting, more fascinating for you. And I hope to see you soon! №11 How I study English

{“en”:”Welcome to Series English! Today I won’t teach you any vocabulary or grammar, I’m just going to tell you my story – how I have been studying English. So let’s start from the very beginning, I studied English at school. I started learning it when I was in the fifth grade. However as long as I am from a teeny-tiny town, you can guess that the teaching was not actually very good, to put it mildly, and I didn’t get profound knowledge of English.

However when I turned 13 or 14 my father decided to study English, and he got me and my sister involved. He did a really good job and he is a very good disciplinarian. So that’s why we studied English for like… We had been studying English for three to four hours a day! Can you imagine that? Well, yeah, that’s true. And, well, as long as you think that learning a foreign language is a piece of cake, well, it’s not actually. If you want to do it very quickly and you want to become a fluent speaker then you have to work really hard. So during our lessons, I guess, we did almost everything! We started from picking up some basic vocabulary and learning the pronunciation.

Of course it was funny, since we tried to pronounce these words and letters, I mean sound over and over again. And we sounded a little bit silly, I guess, but still. In addition we studied grammar of course. Unfortunately now I can’t recover the title, but if I find it, I will give you the title. So, what else?.. Of course we read a lot and we also listened to different tapes. For that purpose we listened ‘The voice of America’ podcasts, we read them, we listened to them, it was very useful! In addition to that we used… we read different fiction books like Harry Potter, yeah, I read all seven books in original, it was really enjoyable and useful I guess. Also we used video material, at first we watched the video course called ‘Follow me’. Maybe you have heard of it, it is a very interesting, funny course. And in addition to that we also watched different films, like ‘Pretty Woman’ and ‘Six days and seven nights’.

We watched ‘Shrek’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’, However we didn’t just watch these films. Of course, at the beginning we watched them for a couple of times to remember the chain of events but after that my father would create mp3 files and we would listen to these parts of the film over and over again. And we would read and translate the script, we would learn and pick up some new vocabulary. It was really interesting and useful. So we studied really hard, and that is the reason why when I finished school I realized, that I want to make linguistics my profession. I want to choose it as my profession and so I did. However I had to pull up treas in order to enter the university, and… however in the end I managed to do that. And well I studied there. At the university we also studied different aspects, However my profession is not only a linguist, but also a translator and an interpreter. So that’s why we practiced translating and interpreting a lot. But it’s also quite useful for language studies. In addition to that we did a lot of listening. We listened to BBC and translated it.

Orally, that was… we interpreted it. It was a tough assignment at first, but then we got used to it. We read a lot of texts, analyzed them, translated them. We did a lot of good stuff, which was really useful. So and I got a lot from my university, of course. And I guess that starting from the third year I started watching TV series and films in English. My first TV series was ‘Scrubs’, and to tell you the truth it was quite hard at the very beginning. I couldn’t understand a lot. However when I kept doing that I realized that it’s getting more and more understandable for me. It’s getting easier and I enjoyed the process. As you can guess I’m crazy about series, and that is actually a very good way to study a foreign language. And I should also add that, well, they say, that teaching is also a way of learning a foreign language. So as long as I teach English I practice it all the time and revise a lot of grammatical topics and issues.

And well this is also studying. OK, I guess that’s it, by the way, speaking about the university, I graduated from it with flying colours, so all excellent marks. However it’s not so important nowadays. I got some perks of course, but this video is not about that. Well actually I’m going to tell you a little bit more about the learning process. And I’m going to devote two more videos… The first one is going to be devoted to beginner and elementary, and the second is going to be devoted to intermediate and higher.

So that I could give you some pieces of advice, because here I didn’t give you anything, I just told you about my experience. And of course, there were some drawbacks, there were some advantages. However now I’m able to analyze this process, and understand what was not right, what was good. And that’s why I’m ready to give you my tips. So don’t forget to follow me, subscribe to my YouTube channel. And watch my other videos. Keep up, ask questions, as usual. I really enjoy answering… I feel really confident when I get your feedback.

So don’t forget to give me your heart as well – like my videos. And hope to see you soon! Happy English practice! Bye-bye!. “}

Top 10 English learning mistakes – part 2, how to study English fast and easy, part 2

{“en”:”Hi! My name is Antonia Romaker! Welcome to Series English! Today we continue talking about mistakes made while learning a foreign language, so English learning mistakes. Well, it can be German learning mistakes, Spanish learning mistakes and so on. It doesn’t matter, because here the mistakes are basically the same for learning any foreign language. So the next mistake is when you think that you are the Superman or the Wonder woman! Here I’m talking about too much self-confidence. Well, the reason why I’ve decided to talk about is is that some students come to me after they have been studying at a linguistic school or at the university. And they were told that their level is very high, like… People come to me and say that they have advanced English, but it turns out that they just have intermediate or even lower. So of course it’s good to be confident, but do not be too confident. Try to evaluate your knowledge properly.

Do not be an arrogant beast, who says: ‘I know everything! I speak English perfectly!’ Everybody makes mistakes. And everybody has some room for perfection. So keep studying! The next mistake is perfectionism. So it’s actually the opposite mistake of the previous one, when you think that you are the Superman. And here you think that nothing is good enough, so you want to speak the language perfectly, making no mistakes what so ever. And that’s why you are so shy and you can’t speak in front of native speakers and so on.

Or even in front of other people, for example in your class. It’s not good, so try to find this balance between an optimist and a realist. So you should be confident, but not too much. And at the same time do not be afraid of making mistakes. Since even native speakers make mistakes, it’s quite OK, it’s natural. And you learn, well, the learning process is connected with making mistakes very closely. It’s good if you have a person who can point out those mistakes for you.

But making them is the part of the learning process, So do not worry if you make some mistakes, just keep studying. And little by little you will improve and your speech will just get perfect. Native speakers usually are glad to hear foreigners speaking their language. So if you hear somebody speaking your mother tongue, you should be, well, excited, you should not, well, stop this person and say: You are speaking awful! Just stop! It is terrible! And you make so many mistakes.

Do not do that, you should know better! Because you know how hard it is to speak a foreign language. So next time you hear somebody speaking your mother tongue try to be a little bit more encouraging, OK? The next mistake – bored to death. So some teachers choose really boring textbooks and materials. It’s not good. Even if you study the language yourself And you just, well, choose some official textbooks with grammar and vocabulary, well-structured.

And you just use these textbooks, you will get bored to death, believe me! So try to make the process more colorful and exciting! Choose the materials you find interesting. For example, I love watching TV shows, and that’s why I watch TV shows in English, in German and probably later on, when I decide to study, let’s say, Spanish, I will watch Spanish TV shows or Television. It helps a lot, because I enjoy the process. So if you like playing games, then play games in English, or German, or Spanish, or any other language. So find your passion and try to connect the learning process with this passion, so that the process won’t be boring! Try to make it fun and then you will improve much faster! The next one is premature speaking. A lot of teachers at many schools and universities make students speak too early. It’s not a very good thing to do, because if you do not have some basic information in your head, some basic structures, and you force yourself, you make yourself speak, you will make a lot of mistakes and it will make you feel depressed and blue.

For example, as for me, I studied the language for a very long period of time with my family: my father and my sister. And for a very long period of time we had been just reading and listening, and watching, and studying grammar and that’s it. And then I met a foreigner, and I just had to speak. I had no other choice, and I spoke really well. At least that foreigner told me so, maybe he was too polite. Anyway I had almost no problems speaking, it was so natural and so easy. So that’s why speaking too early might not be a very good idea. Well, I’m not talking about practicing and creating sentences, you should do it. But as for answering some questions, formulating some ideas, some stories and so on, you should wait for a couple of months to get the idea of the language. And when you get better when you have some structures in your head then you can start speaking. And it will be much easier and much more natural. And the last mistake is formalism. So if you take just formal, official textbooks, like ‘English Grammar in Use’ or something of the kind, and study just using this material without studying some colloquialisms and idioms and, well, slang expressions, it might also be not a very good idea.

Especially if you want to travel to other countries. And if you want to visit the United States of America or the United Kingdom or the Australia, where people speak the language naturally and where people use a lot of slang, then you will find yourself in trouble! So you should study different parts of the language. So this problem is partially connected with you being well-structured. So study some idioms and slang expressions, it will help you a lot. Since any language is a live creature. It improves, it flows, and we need to surf around. OK, so that’s it, today we talked about top mistakes, made while learning a foreign language, made while learning English. I hope that my class helped you a little bit, and now you will try not to make these mistakes and you will study the language properly. If you have any other questions, if you have any other problems, which you have while studying a foreign language, then write a comment, we’ll talk about it, we’ll discuss it. So keep studying English with me and keep studying Russian with me. I hope to see you soon, happy English and Russian practice.

Bye-bye! p.s. If you haven’t watched the first part of ‘English learning mistakes’, then I highly recommend watching it. Here it is, click the link and you will be transported to ‘English learning mistakes, part one’. Do not forget to like this video, it will help me a lot! Also subscribe to my channel to continue studying the languages with me. Bye! I also have the second channel, where I teach English in Russian. So you can find a lot of useful classes there, if you are at the beginning of the process, of the English learning process! Bye!. “}

English language: EASY ways to learn – sharing my secrets!

Hello my dear subscribers! Today I want to share my tips on learning English language I know many of you dream of having a great English language without accent and this was my dream for many years I struggled to learn things, to learn the accent. Today I want to share my most effective tips that I used to learn English language. Now the first thing You have to have a very specific goal like getting into a foreign university or getting a job with an English language employer but I know on different stages of our life we don’t have these specific goals The target is to make learning English your lifestyle. You can do it by doing many different things like the first thing you can do is super easy is just set your iPhone or android or whatever phone you’re using to English language So you’d see all of those English words every day during your life like send a message, watch a video everything should be in English Maybe you’d think you know all of those basic words but really you’d meet so many nuances you’d remember and it’ll stick to your memory and you’d be able to use them later.

The second thing you need to do is surround yourself with English I know this is very difficult. I’m from Russia and not many people speak English here. It’s not like in Finland In Finland everybody speaks perfect English. Finnish people are watching, how do you do it? That’s amazing! But in Russia not everyone speaks good English. There are some people but…

It was very difficult to surround myself with English language But now in the years of media and technology we have YouTube And it is the best thing you can do like switch on a YouTube blogger who speaks English and the best thing to do is maybe select a YouTube blogger who is coming from your country because he would still have a slight accent. I have slight Russian accent. It would be easier for you to understand him or her. It would also motivate you because you would see the person from the same background.

You’d see him speaking English language without an accent. I watch VitalyZDTv He’s from Russia but he films in English and probably you know him, he’s a prankster and he does a lot of pranks he’s amazing. If you’re from Russian speaking background, watch his video. Another thing you can do All of us have Internet and you can watch news on the Internet If you like American English, watch CNN. You can also read their articles It’s not necessary that you only watch the videos.

For British English watch BBC. And I know that some people say than news produced by their country may be biest like maybe there’s propaganda involved. This is a good motivation to watch news in English language you’d get a different view on what’s happening in your country and what’s happening in the world. For many countries this is a problem. So do that, just watch news in English. But make sure that you understand that CNN news are influenced by American culture. BBC is influenced by British culture. Having a video playing on the background for example, I’m watching English language YouTube vloggers when I’m washing up or cooking something. It’s not necessary that I listen to every single word they say but I have this English language background. It really helps. Another thing you can do. Listen to English language songs. This is the easiest part. All of us listen to, I don’t know who’s the most popular now? Justin Biber I know many of you hate him. Justin Biber, Britney Spears all of those names. Pick whoever you like There’s radio one in the United States. I love the music, I listen to it every time in the car and they have the best hits.

You can stream it online or you can download English language songs to your phone. Make sure you read the lyrics before you listrn to it. Listen to it for a couple of times. Read the lyrics and then go back to the song. You’ll be amazed how many thing you understand. When you first listen to the song if it’s a n English rap song, You’d hear you wouldn’t get what they say. But after you read the lyrics, those sounds would make sense. Would make more sense anyways. You’d get a couple of words. Please do that and if you want more details how to learn English using songs please use the link below to see how I do that and how best language schools over the world do that.

Also remember that we live in the digital age. There’re so many things you can do online. like the most basic thing Google translate When you’re translating words from English into your language. Please make sure you know how this word is pronounced in English because memory is not only our brain, memory is also our eyes, ears, senses. When you hear the word as well, you’d make greater progress remembering it. The second thing you can do when you’re googling a word try to google it in images there’s a special section in Google, called Images If you google for a word there you’d get pictures and icons of that word and that would help you remember the word.

I also use stickers like this is one of the best methods you can do place a sticker to different objects in your appratement like sofa lamp, bed. If you’re watching this video, you probably know all of these basic words But try your kitchen. like do you know what buckwheat is? oatmeal wholegrain bread All of those very specific things you’d need when you come to the States. or come to Great Britain you have to know those words. Use your kitchen as a place where you learn like I use containers for grains I just sign them with the words I need to know Another thing you can do our brain is good in remembering things in space You can also use the objects in your room for specific words and it’s not necessary to put a sticker with a word window on window You can put something like admission and then your brain would remember that on window we have something connected with a university. Admissions when you put this weird gear on your face. You use it to learn something. They put you in imaginary room where you can see the objects or words placed on different objects.

Use it in real life. Place diffrent words all over the place. There’re lots of apps you can use to learn English Duolinguo is one of the best which is basically for beginners There’s easy ten to learn just words There’re lots of youTube bloggers like me 🙂 If you like my videos or other youtube bloggers who speak English and teach you different sfuff.

When you download all the apps to your iPhone, make sure you have a screen for all of those apps So for example my first screen when I open my phone, I see this. I see all of the apps I use every day. My second screen is clear. I only have the apps I need to use. they’re connected with my work.

You can do the same with your English language apps. Place them on a separate screen, make sure it comes second and have no more than 6. When you’re waiting for somebody, pick up your phone and and try using some apps You’ll see your target, empty screen five or six apps for English and you’d basically use them to spend your time waiting. I get a lot of questions from people like what books do you recommend to read I’d say if your English is intermediate or pre-Intermediate try children books. I read Jacqueline Wilson the British author, she writes book for children age 12-14. It’s really easy to understand them. The plot is basic. She uses very easy words. Please check her. I leave a couple of books on Kindle. I’ll try and find for you. The second thing you can do is pick up a book written by a guy who speaks your language who comes from your culture.

Try to read his books in English. Translation from your own language would be simplier and you use concepts you’d understand. Maybe it’ll also work for you. The best way is to pick a book that captivates your attention the one you’d be reading. whatever happens. How to study English 3 – motivation & self discipline + textbooks, audio, video

Hi! High five! So welcome to Series English! My name is Antonia Romaker. And today we are going to talk about the way to study the English language. Well, actually I have already two classes, devoted to this topic. And you can check them out, if you want. The first one is connected with my experience only, and the second is about general tips.

So but today we are going to talk about some specifics. However first of all I want to underline the idea once again, that the most important the crucial point in doing anything is your motivation. The reason, why you want to study the language. Find your strong, powerful reason of doing so and the process will be much easier. And it will be quicker, because you will put your heart, your soul into the process. Thus the process will be more interesting, more challenging and fascinating! So you will, well, help yourself a lot, if you find that great strong reason for yourself to study the language. There are so many reasons possible: studies, studies abroad, meeting new people, communicating with other people all around the world, well, your work. Learning a foreign language might be very helpful for your work, especially if we talk about English, if you want to work at an international company.

You can marry a foreigner, why not? You can move to another country. That might be your dream, why not? Start working on it today, right now. So your motivation, find it. It’s not that hard. Secondly, self discipline is very important. because even if you have a tutor or you study at a linguistic school, or at a university, if you do not discipline yourself, the process won’t be as quick as possible. However if you make yourself study at least five minutes a day or twenty minutes a day, one hour a day, that would be just perfect! As for me personally when I studied at the seventh grade, we had been studying English for three or four hours a day. So I am sure that you can find like half an hour a day to study the language.

Just try to push yourself a little bit here. So I am not talking about working your fingers to the bone, like you feel exhausted and you like hate the language already. Don’t do that. You don’t have to do that. But study the language every day. So motivation and self-discipline are the ones, which are the crucial points here. So you can study the language yourself, it is possible nowadays. Because as long as you have the first two – motivation and self-discipline – you will be able to study the language yourself. The only problem is speaking practice, you can’t practice the language without another person, you can’t do it just yourself. But as for other aspects you can do everything on your own, no problem. For example, the books. There are textbooks, millions of textbooks available. So you can use any series, like ‘Headway’, ‘Upstream’, ‘Opportunities’, ‘Inside Out’, ‘Cutting Edge’ and many, many, many more.

There are millions of them, literally nowadays! So that won’t be a problem, you can find one. Usually such textbooks are complex, so they help you train your knowledge at different levels. I mean in different aspects. So you can train your vocabulary, you can train your grammar, your listening and writing too. So providing you have a teacher no problem, this person might check you. But even if there’s nobody to check you you can still write letters, messages, post in diaries and so on. For example, at school me and my classmates used to write little notes to each other in a foreign language and it was really helpful! Just little stupid notes, like some guys would write: ‘I want you…’ then ‘to speak with me’, ‘to help me’, and so on, so it was a little private joke.

Anyway. There are also adapted books with adapted stories. For example, I used to read O. Henry’s stories a lot. They were adapted, a little bit simplified, but still they helped me a lot and I enjoyed reading them. There are also authentic books, you can read them a little bit later. And it will be helpful as well. There are audio books, so you can mix reading and listening at the same time. There are magazines too, a lot of things here. In addition you can also use some extra grammar books, like ‘English Grammar in Use’ series or any other. The ‘English Grammar in Use’ series is my favourite.

Speaking about books, I should once again mention Ilya Franks’ method, who suggested reading books in two languages. One is your original language, and the other one is a foreign language. So his books are kind of divided into two parts, each page has two parts. The same, well, events are described in two languages. One is your native language and the second one is a foreign language. This method is quite useful. Moreover you can also find some audio series, audio podcasts, like VOA, the Voice of America, or A.J. Hoge stories and so one, there are so many courses, audio courses nowadays, you might just try to find some of these. You can listen to them while you are driving, or you are on a bus, on a train, on a plane. Anywhere, in any kind of transport, or wherever you have a couple of minutes for yourself. And of course the video materials. There are tons of them, video courses which are as old as the humanity.

Like the ‘Follow Me’ video course, or ‘Extra English’, a very useful educational TV series, or a TV show. There are more, you can also watch real TV series, like ‘How I met your mother’, ‘The big bang theory’, ‘Scrubs’, ‘House M.D.’, ‘Once upon a time’, ‘Californication’. So you can watch them. Do not worry if you feel that at first you do not seem understand anything. It takes time. With time if you keep doing it, it will get simpler, easier. There are many YouTubers nowadays, who help you study the language too, of course, me included.

There are so many of them. You can find a lot of useful classes, a lot of useful series here. It’s like having your personal tutor, who helps you study each and every topic in grammar, vocabulary and so on. So nowadays it’s getting easier and easier! And if you haven’t decided to study the language yet, or to improve it yet, then now that’s the time to do it, because it is really a piece of cake! There are so many things, which might help you do it. So just stand up, stop being lazy, stop being a couch potato, and just do it, study the language, study the English language or the Japanese language, or the French language, any language you like. The world is your oyster, just have guts to stand up and do whatever you want! And the last item on my list for today is correspondence, or communication.

Of course, it depends. If you have an opportunity to write to a foreigner, who might check your mistakes, who might help you a little bit, or simply who might communicate with you and that’s it, this is great! Then just do it! For example, you might use some Internet services, like Interpals or Facebook to find a foreigner to communicate with. Or might also use Skype to communicate. A very good idea here would be to travel to another country to find some friends. And then when you go back home, you could keep communicating with them using Skype or any other video chat. So communicating is part and parcel of successfully studying a foreign language, mastering a foreign language. Because speaking is like one of the most important spheres of any language.

However usually speaking come a little bit later, first you just learn how to read, how to listen, absorb and understand what other people are saying. And then you lean to speak yourself. Even if speaking and communicating with other people is not your strongest suit, still you need to make yourself communicate, meet new people and use your knowledge. OK, that’s it, I guess enough for today. Once again today we have talked about some things which are more or less general.

Even though we touched upon some layers of the language, vocabulary, using books; listening, using audio and video, grammar, using some extra grammar textbooks, and so on, However, in our next video, devoted to the way you can study a foreign language, I’m going to get even into more details. And tell you about some specific methods, and specific resources you might use. But that’s it for today. I hope that you enjoyed this video class, and you found it quite useful. If you did, please, press the button, like it and share it. And I hope to see you soon! Keep studying foreign languages! Bye-bye! The problem is that many people start studying a foreign language, but then they just quit.

It’s the easiest way in any kind of a problem, challenge or trouble to just quit. But you should remember, that quitting is for losers. So right now just pick up from where you have left, and continue studying the language. Because this challenge should be accepted! I don’t know about you, guys, but studying foreign languages is like the dream for me!.
